Eva Green has officially joined the cast of Netflix’s hit series “Wednesday,” taking on the role of Aunt Ophelia in the upcoming third season, according to Variety. The mysterious character was teased briefly in the final scene of Season 2, which only revealed the back of her head and sparked widespread speculation among fans.
Green’s casting ends theories that Lady Gaga’s character, Rosalyn Rottwood, might secretly be Ophelia. Instead, Green will portray Ophelia Frump, the sister of Morticia Addams, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. As Variety reports, Ophelia’s backstory includes being institutionalized at Willow Hill by her mother, Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley), before ultimately escaping.
Season 2’s finale offered the first real glimpse into the character through Ophelia’s journal, which Morticia passes to Wednesday (Jenna Ortega). The vision Wednesday experiences shows Ophelia as a serene figure with long blond hair and a flower crown—until the tone shifts. Ophelia is then seen imprisoned inside Hester’s mansion, wearing a red dress and scrawling the ominous message “Wednesday must die” in blood on the wall.
Speaking to Variety, Green expressed enthusiasm about joining the Addams universe, calling the show “deliciously dark and witty” and saying she looked forward to bringing her own eccentricity to the role.
“Wednesday” remains one of Netflix’s most successful series worldwide, with Season 1 reaching the top of the streamer’s global TV rankings. Returning cast members include Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Isaac Ordonez, Billie Piper, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Victor Dorobantu, Evie Templeton, Luis Guzmán and Fred Armisen. Green is represented by UTA and Chalcot Square.
