FX orders Far Cry anthology series based on video game franchise

FX orders a Far Cry anthology series from Noah Hawley and Rob Mac

FX has ordered Far Cry, a limited anthology series based on the long-running video game franchise. The project comes from Noah Hawley, known for Fargo and Alien: Earth, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob Mac, who will also star. The series is set to stream on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally.

Producers said each season will follow Far Cry’s established anthology format, featuring a new location and a new cast of characters. Hawley highlighted the appeal of adapting a franchise built on thematic variations, stating: “What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme.”

He added that the opportunity to develop “a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true.”

Mac, who also serves as an executive producer on Welcome to Wrexham, is producing the series through his More Better Productions. Hawley, who recently signed a new overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television, is producing through his company, 26 Keys. His recent series Alien: Earth, which holds a 92% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, was renewed for a second season.

FX Entertainment President Nick Grad said, “FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry.” He thanked Ubisoft for “entrusting us with this beloved property.”

Mac described the collaboration as a major opportunity, saying, “Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realised.” Ubisoft’s Far Cry franchise, launched in 2004, has attracted more than 100 million unique players and is known for its open-world design and distinctive antagonists, including Giancarlo Esposito’s role as Antón in Far Cry 6.

The series will be produced by FX Productions, with a wide team of executive producers from 26 Keys, 3 Arts, More Better Productions and Ubisoft Film & Television.
