Hilary Duff has addressed fan theories suggesting her new single “Mature” includes a subtle jab at Leonardo DiCaprio’s long-discussed pattern of dating younger women. The song, released earlier this month, features lyrics that many listeners interpreted as commentary on men who consistently pursue much younger partners.
Speaking to Vogue, Duff explained that “Mature” reflects on a past relationship and the insecurities that surfaced when she questioned whether her partner had a history of dating significantly younger women. She emphasized that the song is inspired by a real experience from years ago but includes “artistic liberties” to fit its structure.
While many listeners assumed the track referenced Duff’s early-2000s relationship with Joel Madden—she was 16 and he was 25 at the time—others pointed to a specific lyric: “Very Leo of you with your Scorpio touch.” The line sparked widespread online speculation because DiCaprio, 51, has become known for dating women in their early twenties and is currently linked to 27-year-old model Vittoria Ceretti.
Duff’s husband, Matthew Koma, added fuel to the viral conversation by posting a meme of DiCaprio from Titanic holding the single’s cover art. The playful post quickly spread across social media.
During a recent appearance on On Air With Ryan Seacrest, Duff responded to the theories with amusement. She said she and Koma have been entertained by the online guesses, calling the speculation “thrilling” and describing the internet’s reaction as “hilarious.” She also joked that Koma’s meme should not be taken seriously, describing him as “the biggest troll on the planet.”
When pressed on whether the song references DiCaprio directly, Duff kept her answer ambiguous, saying she was “not confirming, not denying anything.”
Duff previously said that writing “Mature” was a therapeutic process, though releasing such vulnerable material can feel daunting. The track has sparked renewed discussion of past relationships in Duff’s life and broader conversations about age gaps in Hollywood dating.
