More than five months after the death of actor Jonathan Joss, a grand jury in Bexar County, Texas, has formally charged the man accused of killing him. According to legal documents reviewed by the Los Angeles Times, 57-year-old Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez was indicted on one count of first-degree murder in connection with the June shooting. Attorneys representing Alvarez did not immediately provide comment.

Police arrested Alvarez shortly after the incident on June 1. Officers were called to the 200 block of Dorsey Street, where they found Joss near the roadway, according to an incident report that initially listed the suspect as “Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja.” First responders attempted to revive the actor, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Joss was 59.

Joss, known for voicing John Redcorn on King of the Hill and for his appearances on Parks and Recreation, Tulsa King, Ray Donovan, ER, Friday Night Lights and Charmed, had returned to the site of his fire-damaged home on the day of the shooting. His husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, later claimed in a Facebook post that both he and Joss had been subjected to homophobic harassment before the shooting and alleged the attack was motivated by anti-LGBTQ+ hostility. He wrote that the man who approached them shouted slurs before opening fire, and said Joss pushed him out of the way, saving his life.

Police, however, publicly rejected the claim that the killing was tied to Joss’ sexual orientation, stating in a June social media post that investigators had found no evidence of a hate-crime motive. The department added that it takes such allegations seriously.

Joss had recorded material for the upcoming King of the Hill revival before his death. A memorial in San Antonio now honors the actor, whose work left a lasting impact on fans and colleagues.
