Lahore's Alhamra pays rich tribute to novelist Bapsi Sidhwa

Academics, writers gather to shed light on life and works of celebrated author

The Lahore Arts Council Alhamra hosted a dignified tribute to the eminent scholar and novelist Bapsi Sidhwa, celebrating her extraordinary literary legacy and enduring influence. Alhamra Chairman Razi Ahmed presided over the ceremony, noting, "Although Sidhwa is no longer with us, her vibrant voice, incisive wit, and profound literary contributions continue to resonate with readers worldwide."

The event featured prominent guests including Professor Naveed Shehzad and Perin C Boga, with Dr Iram Anjum, Principal of Kinnaird College, and several celebrated writers and scholars in attendance.

Sir Athar Tahir, Amna Umar, Owais Rana (Director Archives KC), Dr Zakia Rasheed were also among the notable participants. Professor Waseem Anwar, Director ICPWE, delivered an illuminating talk on Sidhwa’s life, her creative vision, and global impact.

The symposium included documentaries on Sidhwa’s life, a stage sketch, and poetic tributes, celebrating her literary journey.

Renowned Kinnaird alumnae such as Faiqa Mansab, Dr Sarina Haque, Jameela Naqi, and Kinza Javed shared personal reflections, highlighting the inspiration they drew from Sidhwa’s work.

Academia was well represented with Professor Shahid Imtiaz presenting a research paper, while student research papers, reviewed by Dr Amra Raza, Dr Rizwan and Dr Ammara, added scholarly depth to the proceedings. Saira Dur and Dr Fatima Saeed offered analyses of Sidhwa’s literary craft, providing fresh perspectives on her novels and stories.

The event drew a large audience and included a dedicated book exhibition, showcasing works from various publishers, enriching the celebration of Sidhwa’s legacy.
