Disney’s live-action ‘Moana’ trailer offers first glimpse of Maui and Motunui
Disney unveils first-look trailer for live-action ‘Moana’ with Dwayne Johnson and newcomer Catherine Laga’aia

Disney has released the first trailer and images for its upcoming live-action adaptation of the 2016 animated hit Moana.
Directed by Tony Award winner Thomas Kail, the film stars newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui. The film follows Moana as she answers the ocean’s call and embarks on a journey beyond her island of Motunui alongside Maui to restore prosperity to her people.
The trailer introduces the island’s vibrant culture, Moana’s adventurous spirit, and the intimidating yet playful Kakamora tribe. John Tui voices Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams portrays her mother, Sina; and Rena Owen appears as Gramma Tala. Fans of the original film will also recognize the return of Maui, with Johnson bringing his charismatic, larger-than-life performance to the live-action adaptation.
Moana is produced by Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who co-wrote the songs for the original animated film. Kail also serves as executive producer, alongside Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth, and Auliʻi Cravalho, the original voice of Moana. The live-action adaptation promises to blend action, music, and the lush visuals of Polynesian culture while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original story.
Disney confirmed that Moana will be released in theaters on July 10, 2026. Fans can watch the trailer and view the first-look images online, generating early buzz for what is expected to be a summer blockbuster and a visually stunning live-action reimagining of the beloved animated classic.
