Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin has voiced his frustration with Marvel Comics for erasing Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage from continuity.

The acclaimed author, known for his love of superheroes, said the change still “annoys the hell” out of him years later.

In an interview with Popverse, Martin opened up about his lifelong passion for comic books and the joy of exploring decades of interconnected stories. However, he admitted that modern reboots and retcons have made it difficult for him to stay invested. “I don’t like retcons. I don’t like reboots,” Martin said. “I’m following a character for years, sometimes decades, and then they say, ‘None of that stuff happened. We’re starting over.’ That always annoys the hell out of me.”

Martin specifically referenced Marvel’s controversial One More Day and Brand New Day storylines, which saw Spider-Man’s marriage to Mary Jane erased through a deal with Mephisto. The 2007 event remains one of the most divisive moments in Spider-Man history, effectively resetting years of character growth.

“Peter Parker married Mary Jane,” Martin said firmly. “You can’t undo these things, but they do nowadays. But what can you do?”

His comments have resonated with fans who still view the storyline as one of Marvel’s most controversial decisions. Many comic readers share Martin’s frustration with the constant rewriting of iconic stories for new audiences.

Even after decades of storytelling in his own fantasy universe, Martin remains a loyal — if exasperated — fan of the Marvel universe and its complex heroes.
