Disney+ announces Death Stranding Isolations anime from creator Kojima Hideo for 2027
Disney+ has officially unveiled Death Stranding Isolations (working title), an upcoming 2D animated series based on Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed video game franchise.
The announcement was made during the Disney+ Asia Pacific Showcase at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, where Kojima appeared alongside director Takayuki Sano to present the project.
The series marks Kojima Productions’ first collaboration with a global streaming platform and is scheduled to debut in 2027.
Animation will be handled by Japan’s E&H Production, known for its work on Project Bullet/Bullet. Concept art by illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov, recognised for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, was also revealed during the event.
According to Disney+, the hand-drawn series will explore themes of isolation and connection, continuing the narrative universe introduced in Death Stranding. The story will follow several characters — including protagonist Sam Bridges — as they navigate a fractured world facing humanity’s end.
New characters include a female warrior seeking endless conflict, a boy harbouring resentment towards Bridges, and a girl who has accepted her solitude.
Speaking at the event, Kojima said: “I grew up loving Japanese anime, and it has shaped my worldview. I’ve always been a fan of Disney, since I was small, and I was glad that they showed my documentary on the platform. When they approached me, I decided to work with them.”
Director Takayuki Sano added that the goal is to create “a global animation project, with global talent.”
The original Death Stranding game, released in 2019, attracted over 20 million players worldwide and later inspired the sequel Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for PlayStation 5.
The new anime marks another major step in expanding Kojima’s universe into the world of streaming entertainment.
