A24’s ‘Marty Supreme’ trailer signals big awards drive for Chalamet
‘Marty Supreme’ trailer debuts featuring Timothée Chalamet as ping-pong prodigy in 1950s drama destined for Oscars

The trailer for Marty Supreme has officially landed and it positions Timothée Chalamet at the centre of an awards season push that movie buffs and critics alike are already whispering about. The period sporting drama from A24 and director Josh Safdie pays homage to underdog ambition, high stakes and showmanship with the actor playing ping-pong prodigy Marty Mauser in the 1950s.
Chalamet not only leads the cast but also contributes as a producer, signalling his deep investment in the project. Safdie’s solo directorial return after many years ups the intrigue. The new footage captures vintage styling, intense training sequences, high-speed rallies and gritty personal sacrifice as Mauser pursues one goal: supreme mastery of table tennis. Cinematographer Darius Khondji described Chalamet’s preparation as “months and months” of intensive training to authentically portray a professional-level athlete.
From the trailer it is clear that Marty Supreme blends sports drama with Safdie’s trademark edge. Scenes of athletic intensity alternate with clubroom whispers, hotel suites and intimate moments involving Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, adding emotional layers to what could have been purely physical competition. Supporting cast names like Tyler, the Creator and Kevin O’Leary hint at both genre bending and unexpected partnerships.
Fans and commentators responded to the trailer with high expectations. Some argued this could be Chalamet’s best-ever performance, given the physical transformation, period setting and emotional depth. Others pointed to the strategic release timing in December as a clear signal that A24 is positioning it for best picture or best actor contention. Budgets reported to be in the $60-70 million range make it one of the studio’s most ambitious films to date and speak to the company’s confidence in the project.
For Chalamet, whose last major work was playing Bob Dylan in 2024’s A Complete Unknown, Marty Supreme offers a fresh terrain, an athlete story, mid-century backdrop and the kind of character arc that awards campaigners love. The film’s December 25 release date places it in the thick of holiday audiences and critics, just days after the widely-watched Oscars nomination window opens. It is now up to the film itself, the buzz generated by this trailer and the momentum of Chalamet’s star power to carry Marty Supreme to the level the marketing intends.
