A Delta Air Lines pilot has gone viral for his reassuring in-flight message to passengers amid the ongoing US government shutdown that has disrupted air travel nationwide.

As flight delays and cancellations left travelers anxious, the pilot, identified by passengers as Captain Christopher Pennington, took a moment before takeoff to address the tense cabin with empathy and humor.

“I know we probably have a few nervous flyers today, and that’s perfectly understandable,” he said. “This aircraft doesn’t move an inch unless my co-captain and I are absolutely sure it’s safe to do so.”

He then lightened the mood by mentioning his daughter, saying, “My little one just learned the word ‘ice cream.’ I promised her I’d bring her some when I get back home, so nothing unsafe is coming between me, that little girl, and her ice cream.”
