The upcoming biographical film Michael, centered on the life and legacy of Michael Jackson, has already shattered records before reaching theaters. According to data from analytics firm WaveMetrix, the teaser trailer for the Antoine Fuqua-directed project accumulated more than 116.2 million views within its first 24 hours, marking the biggest music biopic trailer launch in history and the largest trailer debut ever for Lionsgate.
The film’s teaser surpassed previous record holders including Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (96.1 million views) and Bob Marley: One Love (60.1 million). The milestone underscores the continued fascination with the late “King of Pop,” whose influence on music and entertainment remains unparalleled more than 15 years after his death.
Set for theatrical release on April 24, 2026, Michael will star Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in the titular role. The film aims to portray both the star’s global superstardom and the complexities of his personal life. Director Antoine Fuqua and producer Graham King — who also produced Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) — are leading the project.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Jaafar Jackson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to portray his uncle, writing, “I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life. To all the fans all over the world, I’ll see you soon.”
Producer Graham King told Variety that Jaafar’s casting was the result of a worldwide search. “I met Jaafar over two years ago and was blown away by the way he organically personifies the spirit and personality of Michael,” King said, calling him the “only person” capable of authentically embodying the pop icon.
Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, also voiced her support, telling Variety, “Jaafar embodies my son. It’s wonderful to see him carry on the Jackson legacy of entertainers and performers.”
The cast of Michael also features Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Juliano Krue Valdi as young Michael Jackson.
