LAHORE:

The quarantine period for 12 giraffes imported from South Africa last month has been successfully completed, Punjab Wildlife Department officials confirmed on Friday.

Of the new arrivals, nine giraffes have been allocated to the Lahore Safari Park, while three will soon be transferred to the Lahore Zoo.

The animals were kept under quarantine at the Safari Park upon arrival to ensure health and acclimatization standards.

Officials said that due to worsening smog conditions in Lahore, the giraffes are being kept inside their quarantine enclosures for additional safety. Veterinary teams continue to monitor their health and behaviour, confirming that all twelve animals are in good condition.

Safari Park management announced that visitors will soon be able to see the giraffes, a first for the park.

A new "Safari Café" is also being developed near the giraffe enclosure, allowing visitors to dine while observing the animals in a semi-natural setting.

Officials expressed optimism that the new arrivals will boost the park's appeal and attract more families and wildlife enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, the Lahore Zoo is preparing to receive three of the giraffes in the coming days.

The zoo currently has only one female giraffe left from a previous batch imported in 2017.

One giraffe from that group died the same year, and another passed away in February 2022.

Wildlife officials said the arrival of new giraffes will reinvigorate public interest in both the Zoo and Safari Park, bringing fresh energy to Lahore's wildlife attractions.
