Oscar-winning producer Vendôme Pictures and French studio Pathé have unveiled the cast for Ibelin, a powerful new drama inspired by the true story of Norwegian gamer Mats Steen.
Directed by Oscar nominee Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), the film stars Charlie Plummer, Stephen Graham, Toni Collette, Isabela Merced, Maisy Stella, and Anthony Hopkins.
Ibelin follows the life of Mats Steen, a young man born with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a degenerative condition that gradually took away his physical abilities. Despite his limitations, Steen built a rich and inspiring life in the online world of World of Warcraft, where he was known as his heroic avatar “Ibelin.” Unknown to his family, he became a beloved figure to thousands of gamers for his humor, empathy, and courage.
The screenplay is written by Ilaria Bernardini (Citadel: Diana) with revisions by Oscar-nominated Hossein Amini (Drive), based on Steen’s blog Musings of Life, which he continued writing until his passing in 2014 at age 25.
Produced by Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi for Vendôme, Jérôme Seydoux for Pathé, and Morten Tyldum alongside Guri Neby for Neby-Tyldum AS, Ibelin will begin filming in Europe in spring/summer 2026.
Black Bear will handle international sales, with CAA Media Finance representing domestic rights. Casting is led by Sarah Finn (Everything Everywhere All at Once), who also serves as an executive producer.
According to Rousselet, Ibelin promises to be “a deeply emotional story told by a remarkable creative team,” reuniting Tyldum with his acclaimed storytelling roots.
