Superman actor David Corenswet was falsely identified as a supporter of a pledge to boycott Israeli film institutions after a troll impersonated him in communications with the campaign organisers, Film Workers for Palestine (FWFP).

The actor’s name appeared among more than 5,000 signatories before FWFP confirmed the signature was fraudulent. The organisation stated that an individual had gone to “great lengths to pretend to be David Corenswet,” and that once the impersonation was discovered, his name was “promptly removed.”

The pledge, backed by thousands of verified industry figures, calls on film professionals to avoid festivals, screenings, and collaborations connected to Israeli government-funded institutions.

Among the confirmed signatories are Olivia Colman, Mark Ruffalo, Tilda Swinton, Javier Bardem, Susan Sarandon, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Ava DuVernay.

Supporters describe the campaign as a cultural protest against what they call “genocide and apartheid” in Palestine. Screenwriter David Farr, a backer of the initiative, said: “The cultural boycott was significant in South Africa. It will be significant this time.”

FWFP emphasised that the pledge is directed at institutions rather than individuals, in line with the principles of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Despite the impersonation incident, organisers said the campaign continues to receive new support from filmmakers advocating for Palestinian justice.

A screenshot from the pledge’s website previously showed Corenswet’s name before it was removed following verification.
