Paramount’s Regretting You has narrowly taken the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated $8.1 million, marking the lowest Halloween weekend in 31 years.
The Colleen Hoover adaptation, starring Allison Williams and McKenna Grace, edged past Universal’s Black Phone 2, which earned $8 million from 3,425 cinemas and has now surpassed $100 million worldwide.
Despite the apparent victory, final rankings could shift once Monday’s figures are confirmed, as both studios have reported similar results.
Analysts note that total weekend takings of $49.8 million represent the weakest box office turnout of 2025 and the poorest Halloween frame since 1993, excluding 2020’s pandemic shutdown.
Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian described the downturn as “a truly scary weekend for the industry,” citing competition from Halloween festivities and the World Series as major factors diverting audiences. He added that cinemas and studios “did what they could to fill the gaps” in a difficult release calendar.
Regretting You has now collected $27.5 million domestically and $23.3 million internationally, reaching a global total of $50.8 million. Meanwhile, Black Phone 2 has become a success story for Blumhouse, taking $61.5 million in North America and $43.3 million overseas.
Other titles contributing to the weekend’s modest returns included Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, which dropped 67 percent to $6 million, and Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia, which earned $4.8 million following a wider release. The rerelease of Back to the Future performed impressively, adding $4.7 million for a cumulative $221.7 million.
Overall, the lack of a major blockbuster left cinemas dependent on smaller releases and event screenings. Industry observers remain hopeful that the upcoming holiday season will revive audience turnout and stabilise the year’s box office performance.
