Pop star Tate McRae faced an awkward onstage moment during her latest concert when she was caught miming mid-performance, with her microphone upside down.
The 22-year-old singer had just wrapped up an energetic dance break when she lifted her mic to continue singing. Fans quickly noticed something was off, McRae’s vocals played perfectly through the speakers, even though the microphone was pointed the wrong way.
Clips of the gaffe have since gone viral, sparking online debate about how much lip-syncing is acceptable during choreography-heavy shows.

Many fans are question if she ever sang live since the beginning of her career.pic.twitter.com/SvDw3V3vWR“Tate McRae shows off that her voice can still come out of speakers despite moving her mouth into the bottom of the microphone,” one user quipped on X.
McRae, who is dating Australian rapper The Kid Laroi, is nearing the end of her first American arena tour, set to wrap up in Los Angeles next month.
Despite the mishap, she told TIME recently that she feels most confident performing onstage, saying, “In front of 20,000 people I have way less fear than sitting in a small room.”
