Rockstar Games has reportedly laid off between 30 and 40 employees across its UK and Canadian studios, as anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 continues ahead of its delayed 2026 release.

The studio confirmed earlier this year that GTA 6 will launch on May 26 2026, following a delay intended to maintain its “high quality standards.”

Despite the setback, enthusiasm for the game remains strong, fuelled by record-breaking trailer views and the return of Vice City in a new open-world setting.

However, analysts have warned that ongoing development challenges and Rockstar’s full return-to-office policy could increase the risk of further delays.

According to a Bloomberg report by journalist Jason Schreier, the recent layoffs affected staff involved in Grand Theft Auto 6’s production.

The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) claimed the dismissals were connected to efforts by employees to unionise within the company.

“All of the affected employees were part of a private union chat group on Discord,” the union said, describing the move as “one of the most blatant acts of union busting in gaming history.”

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, denied those allegations. A spokesperson said the employees were terminated for “gross misconduct, and for no other reason,” adding that Take-Two continued to support Rockstar’s “ambitions and approach.”

The layoffs follow a period of internal tension over Rockstar’s in-office policy, reinstated five days a week in 2024 following a major GTA 6 leak.

At the time, the company said the change was necessary to protect sensitive development material and ensure quality control.

Grand Theft Auto 6 remains one of the most anticipated video game releases to date, with its current launch still planned for May 2026.
