Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles III has formally stripped Prince Andrew of his royal titles and residence, marking one of the most significant royal rebukes in recent history.
In an official statement released Thursday, the Palace announced, “His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles, and Honours of Prince Andrew.” The statement added that the Duke of York will now be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
Andrew’s lease on Royal Lodge — his long-term residence in Windsor — has also been revoked, and he will relocate to alternative private accommodation. The Palace emphasized that these measures were “necessary” despite Andrew’s continued denial of the allegations linked to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
King Charles and Queen Camilla expressed sympathy toward abuse survivors, stating that their “thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”
Earlier this month, Andrew voluntarily agreed to stop using his Duke of York title, issuing a statement saying, “I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.”
The decision follows years of controversy surrounding Andrew’s ties to Epstein, which forced him to step back from royal duties in 2019. The latest move signals King Charles’s determination to uphold the integrity of the monarchy as he continues to modernize and distance the royal family from scandal.
This story remains developing as further updates from Buckingham Palace are expected.
