Selena Gomez has come under fire after one of her alleged Rare Beauty models accused her of making “degrading” comments about their work during a recent public appearance.
While speaking at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington DC, the singer and entrepreneur highlighted Rare Beauty’s emphasis on authenticity, saying, “We don’t use models. We use people who I have felt they can be your best friend. I want something real.”
The statement, meant to reflect the brand’s inclusive approach, did not sit well with one model who claims to have worked for Rare Beauty since 2024.
In an interview with The US Sun, the anonymous model said she felt disheartened and humiliated by Gomez’s choice of words.
“I was already having a tough day, and then I saw that clip,” she shared. “It made me feel like my work doesn’t count, like I’m not even a real model. I looked up to Selena, so hearing her say that was painful.”
The model described the moment as “degrading and embarrassing,” adding that she was overwhelmed by messages from friends and family who had also seen the video.
“I hope she realizes the weight her words carry,” she said, expressing that she no longer wishes to meet Gomez in person.
Founded in 2019 and launched in 2020, Rare Beauty has become one of the most successful celebrity beauty brands, celebrated for its inclusive message and charitable work. Through the Rare Impact Fund, one percent of annual sales go toward improving access to mental health services.
Gomez has often said that the brand’s mission is to promote self-acceptance over perfection. “Being rare is about being comfortable with yourself,” she wrote on the company’s website.
