Sanitation crew 'targeted' in gun attack
Witnesses say assailant hurled threats before escaping the scene

An unidentified man opened fire on members of the Suthra Punjab sanitation team at Glass Factory Chowk, within the jurisdiction of Waris Khan Police Station, before fleeing the scene after issuing threats to return. However, no one was hurt in the incident.
Following the incident, Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Khalid Hamdani took notice and directed the police to initiate immediate action.
Sanitary Supervisor of RWMC Union Council 31, Noorul Haq, lodged a written complaint with the police stating that on Tuesday morning, sanitation staff had reported for duty when a man driving a car — dressed in black trousers and a black shirt — arrived at the site and began verbally abusing the workers.
The suspect allegedly shouted that those employed under the Suthra Punjab Programme and wearing its uniform would be killed, after which he opened fire on the workers, identified as Mansoor, Gulraiz, Dawood, and others.
The workers managed to escape unhurt by running for cover, while the assailant fled the scene, threatening to return later.
The attack caused alarm and concern among sanitation staff working under the Suthra Punjab Programme. The supervisor reported that after dialling the 15 police helpline, they were informed that Waris Khan Police would respond, but officers arrived nearly an hour later. Upon arrival, the police collected spent bullet casings, recorded statements, and instructed the complainant to submit a formal written application, which has since been filed. The suspect reportedly threatened to come back the following day.
Sanitary Supervisor Noorul Haq has demanded legal action and security protection for the sanitation workers.
Meanwhile, CPO Hamdani took notice of the firing incident, seeking a report from Waris Khan SDPO and directing the police to trace and apprehend the assailant without delay.
According to initial police investigations, a man arrived in a vehicle, fired several shots into the air, hurled abuse, and fled. Preliminary findings suggest that the sanitation workers were not the intended target, although all possible angles are being examined.
The Waris Khan Police have launched a formal investigation, reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the suspect. Officials have assured that those responsible will be traced, arrested, and brought to justice.
