Shakira supports Bad Bunny amid Super Bowl halftime show controversy
Shakira has spoken out in support of Bad Bunny following controversy surrounding his upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance.
In an interview published on October 21, the Colombian singer told Variety it was “about time” a Spanish-language artist headlined the event.
“I remember when we did ours that even having part of our set in Spanish was a bold move… Acceptance of Spanish-language music as part of the mainstream has come so far from when I started,” she said.
Shakira, who co-headlined the 2020 Super Bowl show with Jennifer Lopez, said she was “proud” of Bad Bunny for representing Latin culture on such a global stage.
“It represents not only Latin culture but also how important Spanish-language music has become on a global scale and how universal it has become,” she explained.
Her comments come after criticism of the NFL’s decision to have the Puerto Rican rapper headline Super Bowl 60, which will take place in Santa Clara, California, on 8 February.
Some public figures, including former President Donald Trump and ex-race car driver Danica Patrick, voiced opposition, while the Trump administration warned of ICE presence at the event.
Jennifer Lopez has also defended Bad Bunny, encouraging audiences to remain open-minded. Speaking on CBS Mornings, she said, “Music and art transcend language. It doesn’t matter. He’s done that probably more than anybody of any generation.”
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reaffirmed the league’s support for the choice, calling Bad Bunny “one of the leading and most popular entertainers in the world.”
He added, “We’re confident it’s going to be a great show and that he understands the platform that he’s on. I think it’s going to be exciting and a united moment.”
Super Bowl 60 will be broadcast live worldwide.
