HEC appoints regional director for Karachi

KARACHI:

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has appointed Suleman Ahmed as the new Regional Director for Karachi, the country's largest city, nearly a month after the post fell vacant.

According to a notification issued by the HEC's Assistant Director HRM, Grade-19 officer Suleman Ahmed - previously serving at the National Academy of Higher Education (NAHE) - has been posted as the in-charge of the HEC Karachi Regional Office.

Interestingly, Suleman Ahmed has earlier served in the same capacity in Karachi.

The position had remained vacant since last month when former Regional Director Nazir Hussain was transferred and appointed as Director General (Human Resources) at the HEC headquarters. In the interim, the responsibilities of Regional Director were being handled by a junior officer, leaving the Karachi office - which oversees higher education affairs across Sindh - functioning on an ad hoc basis.

The HEC Karachi office plays a key role in verifying degrees and documents for students from public and private universities across Sindh, while also facilitating hundreds of visitors daily.

It is pertinent to mention that HEC Chairman Nadeem Mehboob, who is also the Federal Secretary for Education, is currently holding the position on an acting basis. Around 550 applications have been received for the post of permanent HEC Chairman, and the scrutiny process by the search committee is still underway.
