CM Afridi's push for punctual sessions falters amid quorum
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly session, convened on the directives of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi to begin punctually, was adjourned on Tuesday due to a lack of quorum as lawmakers failed to show up in sufficient numbers.
Despite the chief minister's instructions to start proceedings on time, the session collapsed shortly after it began, with only 25 members present, which is far below the required minimum of 38 legislators for a quorum.
The assembly meeting began around 2:30 pm, presided over by Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, following recitation from the Holy Quran and the national anthem.
Before the day's parliamentary business could begin, ANP lawmaker Arbab Usman rose from his seat, pointing out the empty benches and criticising the lack of attendance.
He noted that while it was commendable that the assembly had started on time in line with the chief minister's orders, it was unfortunate that "public resources were being wasted" due to members' absence.
Acting on the objection, the speaker directed a headcount, which confirmed the assembly's attendance at just 25 members. Consequently, Speaker Swati adjourned the session till 2 pm on Friday, October 24.
According to sources, the assembly had in recent weeks developed a habit of starting its sessions two to three hours late, often due to members' delayed arrival. The chief minister had issued clear instructions to reverse this practice and ensure punctual sittings.
Officials added that many lawmakers were reportedly en route to the assembly when the adjournment was announced.
