Netflix acquires rights to Catan board game, plans film and tv adaptations
Netflix acquires exclusive rights to Catan and plans scripted and unscripted adaptations of the iconic game

Netflix has secured the exclusive global rights to Catan, the iconic board game created by Klaus Teuber, and is developing a wide range of adaptations across television, film, animation, and games. The streaming giant announced plans to produce both scripted and unscripted projects, including live-action and animated content, all set in the game's fictional world where settlers compete for resources, form alliances, and navigate unpredictable landscapes.
“Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” said Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada. “We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore ‘Settlers’ and new fans alike.”
Originally released in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan, the game has sold more than 45 million copies and been translated into over 40 languages. Known for its emphasis on strategy, negotiation, and world-building, Catan has become one of the most popular and influential modern board games, often referred to as a “gateway” to the broader world of tabletop gaming.
The adaptations will be produced by Darren Kyman of Asmodee, Pete Fenlon of Catan Studio, and Klaus Teuber’s sons, Benjamin and Guido Teuber, alongside producer Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment. The Teuber brothers, who serve as co-CEOs of Catan GmbH, said, “This collaboration with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter in [our father’s] journey.”
Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee, added, “Millions have enjoyed Catan since its creation. I’m excited to see it reach an even wider audience through storytelling.”
The move strengthens Netflix’s growing portfolio of game-based adaptations, which already includes Castlevania, Arcane, Exploding Kittens, and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed, Magic: The Gathering, and Gears of War projects. The Catan adaptations aim to bring the game’s community-driven spirit and strategic gameplay to global audiences on screen for the first time.
