Lily Allen has revealed that her forthcoming album includes lyrics inspired by her marriage to actor David Harbour, though she clarified that not every lyric reflects literal events.
Speaking to British Vogue in an interview published on October 17, Allen discussed how her new record draws on personal experiences surrounding her relationship and its breakdown.
“There are things that are on the record that I experienced within my marriage, but that’s not to say that it’s all gospel,” she said. “It is inspired by what went on in the relationship.”
The 40-year-old singer, known for hits such as Smile and The Fear, references themes of infidelity and emotional distance in her new songs. In one track titled Sleepwalking, Allen sings, “You let me think it was me in my head / And nothing to do with them girls in your bed.”
Another song, Dallas Major, includes the lyric, “I probably should explain how my marriage has been open since my husband went astray.”
Allen and Harbour, 50, married in a Las Vegas ceremony in September 2020 after being first linked in 2019. Multiple sources confirmed earlier this year that the couple had separated following four years of marriage.
After their split, Allen spoke openly about her mental health on her BBC podcast Miss Me?, revealing she entered a treatment centre for several weeks. “I just feel very grateful to have been given the time and the space that I needed,” she said.
Harbour, best known for his role in Stranger Things, has not commented publicly on the album or its lyrics.
Allen has yet to announce an official release date for the record, which will be her first full-length studio album since 2018’s No Shame.
