Pump pressure eases as govt slashes POL prices

Petrol rates cut by Rs5.66/litre, HSD's by Rs1.39/litre

The government on Wednesday slashed the prices of petroleum products by up to Rs5.66 per litre effective from October 16.

The government has reduced the price of petrol by Rs5.66 per litre in line with fluctuation in global market.

The government also reduced the price of high speed diesel by Rs1.39 per litre, kerosene oil Rs3.26 per litre and light diesel oil Rs2.74 per litre.

The high-speed diesel will now be available at Rs275.41 per litre against the old price of Rs276.81 per liter registering a decline of Rs1.39 per litre.

The government has adjusted the prices of petroleum products for the fortnight starting October 16, 2025, based on the recommendations of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the relevant Ministries.

According to the notification issued by the Finance Division, the price of petrol (MS) has been reduced by Rs 5.66 per litre, bringing it down from Rs 268.68 to Rs263.02.

The rate of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been slashed by Rs 1.39 to Rs 275.41 per litre. Superior kerosene oil (SKO) and light diesel oil (LDO) have been reduced by Rs 3.26 and Rs 2.74 per litre respectively which are now be sold at Rs 181.71 and Rs 162.76.

High speed diesel is widely used in transport and agriculture sectors. Therefore, reduction in its price will have positive impact on the life of the consumers.

Petrol is used in motorbikes and cars and is alternate to CNG. The CNG sector in Punjab is using imported gas and therefore, petrol demand is higher.

Kerosene is used for cooking purpose in remote areas of Pakistan especially northern part of the country where LPG is not available. Pakistan army is key user of keroese. Light diesel is used in industry.

The oil industry had seen a decline in prices for petrol by Rs 6.10 per litre, high speed diesel Rs 0.97 per litre, kerosene oil Rs2.74 and light diesel oil Rs1.64 per litre.

At present, the consumers are paying Rs80.52 per liter petroleum levy and carbon surcharge and Rs79.51 per litre for high speed diesel.

Current IFEM rates amount Rs8.69 for petrol and Rs6.19 for HSD. The petrol premium amounts $6.62 per barrel and HSD at $3.20 per barrel.
