Director teases 'KPop Demon Hunters' 2 plot revealing origins of HUNTR/X in possible sequel

'KPop Demon Hunters' 2 could explore the origins of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey as HUNTR/X if Netflix confirms the sequel

Director Maggie Kang has shared new details about what fans could expect from KPop Demon Hunters 2, revealing that the sequel would focus on the origins of HUNTR/X if the project receives approval from Netflix.

Following its record-breaking debut in June, KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix’s most-watched animated film and even saw its fictional K-pop group, Saja Boys, top Spotify’s US charts. The movie also inspired global singalong screenings featuring hits like Golden and Your Idol.

While Netflix has not yet confirmed a sequel, the film’s popularity makes continuation highly likely. The first movie, co-produced by Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Netflix, remains among the platform’s top titles months after release.

Negotiations are said to be underway between Sony, Netflix, and directors Kang and Chris Appelhans for a potential follow-up.

If greenlit, Kang said she would like the sequel to explore the untold history of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, and how they became demon hunters. “We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that’s brand new to people,” Kang explained. “If a sequel happens, then we can reveal more of that backstory.”

Arden Cho, who voices Rumi, has also expressed hopes that the sequel could revisit Jinu’s fate after his sacrifice in the first film, teasing that “anything is possible” in its magical world.

Kang confirmed that she and Appelhans are developing story ideas but ruled out a live-action adaptation, saying the tone and energy of KPop Demon Hunters “are so suited for animation.”

If production begins soon, fans could expect KPop Demon Hunters 2 between 2027 and 2028. For now, the directors have assured viewers that there is “definitely more we can do with these characters and this world.”
