James Gunn teases Superman sequel after Peacemaker season 2 finale

James Gunn confirms Peacemaker finale sets up key DCU elements and hints at Superman: Man of Tomorrow storyline

The Peacemaker Season 2 finale has changed the trajectory of the DC Universe forever, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn.

The episode, titled “Full Nelson,” introduces two major new elements to the franchise — the covert agency Checkmate and the metahuman prison planet Salvation.

In a recent press conference, Gunn revealed that Salvation will play a central role in his upcoming 2028 film Superman: Man of Tomorrow. He explained that both Checkmate and Salvation were part of his long-term vision for the DCU even before he officially took charge alongside Peter Safran.

In the finale, Peacemaker (John Cena) and his allies establish Checkmate, a private crime-fighting agency that aims to operate independently from the government. The group’s creation marks a turning point for the 11th Street Kids, representing their shift toward doing genuine good.

Meanwhile, the A.R.G.U.S. agency, led by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), discovers an alternate Earth-like planet that becomes Salvation — a place intended to imprison metahumans deemed too dangerous for Earth. Gunn described the concept as “a little rash,” hinting at hidden dangers that will unfold in future DCU projects.

While Gunn confirmed there are no immediate plans for Peacemaker Season 3, he teased that the storylines introduced in the finale will continue in other DCU titles, including Lanterns and the next Superman film.

Gunn emphasized that his goal is to build the DC Universe through emotionally grounded storytelling rather than complex “mumbo jumbo.” As he put it, “A prison in another dimension is easy to understand — and say in one sentence.”
