As anticipation builds for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize announcement, attention turns to the five individuals entrusted with determining one of the world’s most prestigious honors.

Appointed by Norway’s parliament, the members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee are responsible for selecting a laureate who best embodies Alfred Nobel’s vision of peace and fraternity among nations.

This year, speculation has intensified around whether US President Donald Trump, who claims to have resolved multiple international conflicts, could be considered alongside other humanitarian or political candidates.

The committee is chaired by Jørgen Watne Frydnes, 41, the youngest person ever to hold the position. A dedicated human rights advocate, he previously served as secretary-general of PEN Norway and worked with Médecins Sans Frontières. Frydnes also helped rebuild Utoeya Island after the 2011 massacre that targeted Norway’s Labour Party youth camp, earning recognition for his commitment to democracy and free expression.

Vice Chair Asle Toje, 51, is a conservative scholar and former research director at the Norwegian Nobel Institute. Known for his realist perspective on international relations, Toje was reappointed this year for another term extending to 2029. Though often outspoken about global affairs, he has emphasized that lobbying efforts, including from high-profile figures like Trump, do not influence the committee’s independence.

Anne Enger, 75, a former politician from Norway’s Centre Party, once served as minister of culture and briefly as acting prime minister. Originally trained as a nurse, she became a key figure in Norwegian politics, particularly for her opposition to European Union membership and her advocacy for rural and traditional values.

Economist and former education minister Kristin Clemet, 68, brings an analytical and liberal perspective to the panel. A member of the Conservative Party, she has frequently voiced concern over the decline of democratic values worldwide and continues to stress the importance of education and civic responsibility in promoting peace.

Rounding out the committee is Gry Larsen, 49, a former state secretary and current head of CARE Norway. With a long background in humanitarian work, she has consistently championed women’s rights and equality on a global scale. Her career reflects a focus on compassion and justice, even as her firm stances on certain international issues have sparked debate.

Together, these five figures must weigh complex moral, political, and humanitarian considerations as they decide who will receive this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

With figures like Trump actively lobbying and other global contenders in the mix, the committee’s choice will once again shape the international conversation about peace and leadership.
