KARACHI:

The Sindh government has approved the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 policy, marking a major step in the province's efforts to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Chief Minister's Adviser on Environment Dost Rahimoon said that Sindh has formally set its climate targets under the framework of the Paris Climate Agreement. Under these targets, the province aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030, with 15% of the efforts financed through provincial resources and 35% expected through international cooperation and funding.

Speaking on the occasion, Environment Secretary Zubair Channa shared details of the province's approach to tackling climate risks. He said the government has developed comprehensive policy proposals across key sectors such as energy, transport, agriculture, forestry, water, waste management, and urban infrastructure.

He highlighted several flagship projects under the NDC 3.0 framework, including expansion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system; phasing out diesel-powered public buses; promotion of electric vehicles; afforestation drives; and restoration of mangrove forests along the coast.

The environment secretary further stated that major reforms have been proposed in the waste management sector, with upcoming projects focusing on recycling, composting, plastic reuse, and waste-to-energy conversion.

Moreover, wastewater treatment and groundwater recharge projects will be introduced to promote sustainable water usage in both urban and agricultural areas.
