Taylor Swift cleared up rumors about her speech at Selena Gomez’s wedding, and explained why she made sure not to mention her engagement to Travis Kelce.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Swift dismissed reports that she joked Gomez had “beaten her to the altar.”
“Absolutely not,” she said.
“Selena was the most elegant, gorgeous, not only bride but just vision that I’ve ever seen in my life. She deserves all of this happiness. Benny is so funny. He’s the best.”
Swift revealed she made a deliberate effort to keep her own engagement out of her speech. “I actually made a point not to mention anything about my engagement,” she said.
“Nobody wants you to be like, ‘Hey, I know this is your wedding day, but I’m engaged!’ I was like, don’t mention it, maybe even turn the ring around.”
Instead, Swift said her speech focused on their long friendship and their shared teenage years. “I did some light teasing about how we used to dress in 2008, the year we met,” she added.
“It was the year of deep V-necks and colorful skinny jeans. I talked about how happy I am for her and how beautiful it’s been to be part of her life. But I did not make it about me.”

“I’ve never seen anything so beautiful as her on her wedding day. She deserves all of this happiness… I did make a speech…I talked a little bit about 2008 and how happy I am for her.”

“Selena was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, just so happy, and she deserves it so much,” she said.
In a recent Instagram post celebrating their bond, Gomez wrote, “In honor of Showgirl… blessed to have you by my side almost 20 years later, gator! I love you @taylorswift forever and always.”
