Flood losses report due next week

During this year's monsoon, heavy flooding occurred in the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers. Nationwide, the floods caused 1,037 deaths with 509 deaths reported in K-P and 322 in Punjab.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Friday briefed the National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning and Development on recent floods

Chaired by MNA Syed Abdul Qadir Gilani, the meeting was convened to review the agenda items related to recent flood damages, the scope and performance of the National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF), and flood-prevention projects in Balochistan.

Officials from the NDMA told the panel that overall, 1,066 people sustained injuries. Twenty-seven districts of Punjab were affected.

The planning secretary told the committee that work was ongoing to prepare estimates of the financial losses caused by the floods.

The preliminary assessment was expected to be completed early next week. He further said that the government had also contacted donor agencies in relation to flood damages.

The floods that struck the country this year have so far caused an estimated Rs3,856 billion in damages, while the economy faces an additional Rs740 billion in potential losses, officials disclosed on Thursday.
