KARACHI:

The Sindh government has introduced strict fines and demerit points for traffic violations to make roads safer. Overspeeding, signal jumping, wrong-way driving, overloading, and driving without a license will now face tough penalties.

Key fines under the new system:

Overspeeding: Rs5,000 for motorcycles, Rs15,000 for cars, Rs20,000 for heavy vehicles + 8 demerit points

Driving without a license: Up to Rs50,000 + 6 points

Reckless driving: Rs25,000 + 8 points

Other violations: One-wheeling, riding without a helmet, tinted windows, wrong-lane driving, carrying passengers on rooftops

Senior Sindh Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, stressed that these measures are not aimed at collecting revenue but at saving lives and ensuring road safety.

“Traffic offenses such as signal jumping, overspeeding, and one-wheeling are not minor acts — they are deadly behaviors that endanger not just the drivers but also others on the road,” he said, adding that repeat violators could face suspension or cancellation of their driving licenses.

He further said that the Sindh government is working to modernise traffic management by introducing a digital monitoring system and strengthening the capacity of the traffic police.

He noted that the demerit points system would help track repeat offenders, a practice that has been implemented successfully in developed countries.

Awareness campaigns will also be launched to educate citizens about traffic rules and encourage voluntary compliance, Memon said. “Our objective is to build a culture of safe driving and protect lives, not just impose fines,” he added.
