Pakistan Engineering Council begins work on flood action plans

Initiates 12-month short-term action plan

The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has intiated work on short and medium-term frameworks including consultations on a comprehensive strategy to tackle flood challenges. PEC organized a high-level roundtable conference of experts, attended by international specialists, federal and provincial officials, and representatives of donor agencies.

PEC has begun the process of preparing a 12-month short-term action plan, with a medium-term strategy covering one to three years also being part of the framework.

The projects aim to adopt an effective and integrated system rather than just emergency response. The framework is expected to reduce flood impacts on communities, livelihoods, and basic facilities. Protecting agricultural production and food security from flood damages will be a key part of the action plan.

Experts emphasized the need for a proactive strategy to lessen the economic pressure caused by floods.

PEC Chairman Engineer Wasim Nazir stated that institutions need to work beyond the usual in the current situation. A flood resilience framework is being developed for 2026 and the years ahead. The Engineering Council is committed to close collaboration with the government and institutions.

Engineer Wasim Nazir said the focus is on significantly reducing flood damages in the coming years. The framework will propose measures to protect agriculture, livestock, and the public economy, "An action plan based on expert opinions will be prepared and sent to the government for implementation."
