Patricia Routledge, famed for playing Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances, has died at 96.

Patricia Routledge, the celebrated British actress best known for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in the hit sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96. Her passing was confirmed by her agent in a statement to PA Media, noting that she “died peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love.” The statement added that her passion for performance never faded, even in her later years, and that she continued to inspire new generations through her beloved television work.

Born near Liverpool, Routledge first established herself on stage in both the United Kingdom and the United States. She won a Tony Award in 1968 for Best Actress in a Musical for Darling of the Day, followed by an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Candide in 1988. Despite her extensive theatre career, it was television that brought her the most recognition.

From 1990 to 1995, Routledge starred in Keeping Up Appearances as the status-conscious Hyacinth Bucket, who famously insisted her surname be pronounced “Bouquet.” The series became a global success, running for five seasons and achieving significant international popularity in the United States, Canada, Australia, and across Europe. In 2016, it was named BBC Worldwide’s most exported TV show. For her performance, Routledge received a British Comedy Award in 1991 and two consecutive BAFTA TV Award nominations.

She later took on the lead role in the crime drama Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, which aired from 1996 to 1998 and showcased her versatility beyond comedy.

In recognition of her contributions to entertainment and charity, Routledge was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2017. She leaves behind a legacy as one of Britain’s most cherished performers.
