Mariah Carey has reignited her long-standing shade toward Jennifer Lopez, once again claiming she still doesn’t know the fellow pop star. During her October 2 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the Grammy-winning singer was asked about her infamous 2003 remark in which she dismissed Lopez with the now-viral line, “I don’t know her.”
Host Andy Cohen referenced how the phrase has since become a pop culture staple, frequently discussed on the show. Carey, 56, responded with a laugh, maintaining she was simply telling the truth at the time. “The thing is, I was being honest when I said it,” she explained. “So I don’t know how it became so big. Honesty isn’t really something that becomes big most of the time.”
Cohen pressed further, asking if she still didn’t know Lopez. With a smirk and a sigh, Carey replied, “How could I suddenly know [her], you know?” The audience erupted in laughter, and social media quickly lit up with praise for Carey’s quick-witted response, hailing her as the “queen of shade.”
The feud between the two singers dates back over two decades. Lopez previously addressed Carey’s original comment in a 2016 interview on The Wendy Williams Show, calling the singer “forgetful” and claiming they had met on several occasions. Carey, however, stood firm, saying at the time, “I don’t remember that. Like, what am I supposed to say? I don’t know her.”
During the WWHL episode, Carey also addressed other pop culture moments, including her rumored beef with rapper Eminem. She confirmed there was “truth” to reports he once asked her to play his mother in 8 Mile, but brushed it off, saying, “Whatever he said, then I’m that. Fine. Not really, but that’s a rap lyric.”
Carey also made a playful jab at ex-husband Nick Cannon, reacting to news he insured his testicles for $10 million. “Lord, help me,” she said with an eye roll.
