Marvel Studios originally planned for Daredevil: Born Again to feature a dedicated episode bringing together Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Alaqua Cox’s Echo.
The idea was scrapped when the series underwent a significant creative overhaul.
Writer Jesse Wigutow revealed that Marvel once intended to produce a “bottle episode” exploring a night shared between the two vigilantes. “It involved the Punisher and Echo spending an interesting night together — not romantically, but narratively,” Wigutow explained. However, the storyline was ultimately abandoned as Marvel shifted the direction of the show.
The changes came midway through production of season one, when Marvel decided to pivot away from a fresh start and instead align the series more closely with Netflix’s original Daredevil. New material was filmed, including a reworked pilot and finale, while some newer characters, such as Echo, were reduced in focus.
Punisher, a veteran of Marvel’s Netflix era, remains a key character and will next appear in a Disney+ special before joining the upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Echo, meanwhile, received her own Disney+ spinoff but only made brief appearances in Born Again.
Despite the scrapped concept, Wigutow has continued working on the series and confirmed he is involved in season two, scheduled to release in March 2026. The new season will center on Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk as New York’s mayor, with Charlie Cox returning as Matt Murdock.
Looking ahead, Daredevil: Born Again has already been renewed for a third season. Wigutow emphasized that while the show explores broader political intrigue, its core remains the tense relationship between Daredevil and Fisk — two enemies locked in a rivalry that defines the series.
