The latest trailer for Pokemon Legends Z-A has generated excitement for the upcoming release, but one battle sequence has left players questioning how combat will function in the game.
The footage, released on September 30, featured exploration around Lumiose City alongside gameplay showcasing the continuation of mechanics first introduced in Legends Arceus.
However, attention quickly shifted to a scene where a level 50 Gyarados used Surf against a level 32 Houndoom. Despite the type advantage and level gap, the Fire-type opponent withstood the attack, losing only part of its health bar.
The moment caused widespread discussion among fans. On X, user WilliamTimeMage suggested Gyarados’s low special attack was to blame, saying, “60 base special attack lol it’s the equivalent of Gardevoir using a physical attack.” Others noted that Gyarados is primarily a physical attacker, making special moves less effective.
Players also speculated that Alpha Pokémon, first introduced in Legends Arceus, could explain the resilience. User Pepperle78 commented: “It’s because he’s a physical attacker attacking an alpha Houndoom.” Alpha Pokémon are known for boosted stats and increased durability, which could have contributed to the outcome.
Some fans supported the apparent change, arguing it could make battles feel more engaging. “I love when they make Pokémon spongier,” one player said. “One or two hit KO’ing a Pokémon doesn’t feel like a fight to me.”
Others pointed to the real-time mechanics of Legends Arceus, where move power was adjusted for balance, speculating that Surf may have been reduced to base 50 power in this system.
The scene has sparked debate over whether Pokemon Legends Z-A will continue moving away from traditional turn-based combat in favour of pacing adjustments unique to its setting.
