Tensions flared at the University of Karachi on Wednesday afternoon when a violent clash broke out between two student organisations. The clash left one student injured and resulted in an attempt to set multiple motorcycles on fire near the Arts Lobby, right outside the university's administrative building.
According to eyewitnesses, around two dozen members of one student group attacked a few students from a rival organisation stationed at their stand with sticks and batons. The attack left a student named Faheem injured, suffering blows to his head and leg.
In a dramatic turn of events, the injured student fled toward the Arts Lobby to escape further harm. Some university staff members intervened and escorted him to the Vice Chancellor's Secretariat for safety. University of Karachi Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi, who was present at the time, transported Faheem in his official car to the campus clinic for first aid.
Meanwhile, members of the attacking group attempted to torch several motorcycles parked near the Arts Lobby. One motorcycle was completely destroyed by the fire. The incident occurred right at front of the university's administrative block, raising serious concerns over campus security.
Following the incident, police personnel from Mubeena Town Police Station arrived at the scene and assessed the situation. However, as of Wednesday evening, no First Information Report (FIR) had been officially registered.
Speaking to The Express Tribune, the University's Campus Security Advisor Salman Zubair confirmed that the same student groups had a minor altercation the previous day, which was resolved in the presence of Rangers officers through dialogue. Both parties had reportedly pledged to avoid future confrontations, but despite that agreement, tensions boiled over again the next day. Police officials also confirmed that no student group had formally approached the station to file a complaint.
