A violent clash between two student organisations at Karachi University on Wednesday escalated into street protests, with dozens of students staging a sit-in outside Mubina Town police station.
Demonstrators set tyres ablaze, blocking traffic on Abul Hassan Ispahani Road, and accused police of delaying the registration of a case against their rivals.
The protest followed an incident earlier in the day when nearly two dozen members of one student group attacked the rival group’s camp with sticks near the university’s Arts Lobby.
At least one student, identified as Faheem, sustained head and leg injuries. Attackers also torched motorcycles parked in front of the administration building, leaving one vehicle destroyed.
Eyewitnesses said the injured student managed to escape into the Arts Lobby, where university staff sheltered him and later escorted him to the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi personally transported him to the campus clinic for treatment.
Campus security officials confirmed that tensions between the two groups had flared a day earlier, despite attempts by Rangers officers to mediate a truce. By Wednesday afternoon, the situation again turned violent, prompting police deployment on the university grounds.
Outside the police station, protesting students demanded immediate registration of a case and the arrest of named suspects, warning that demonstrations would continue otherwise.
Mubina Town SHO Chaudhry Nawaz said police were in the process of lodging a case and were negotiating with the protesters to disperse peacefully.
