The actor, who has voiced Buzz Lightyear since Pixar’s first Toy Story in 1995, confirmed that he and Tom Hanks will reunite for Toy Story 5.
Allen said the upcoming film will be centered on Jessie, the beloved cowgirl voiced by Joan Cusack, but will also feature plenty of Buzz, literally.
“There’s a whole bunch of Buzzes involved,” Allen explained. “There’s a reason why there’s a hundred of me in a separate story, and I get to play them. I’m having so much fun.”
He added that while Pixar prefers actors to stick to the script, he sometimes sneaks in improvisation: “They don’t like when you ad-lib. They go, ‘Ah, that’s funny, now we’ve got to rewrite all this stuff.’”
Reflecting on the emotional weight of the franchise, Allen admitted that recording the final lines of Toy Story 4 was difficult. “Tom and I couldn’t even say it to each other,” he recalled of their iconic “To infinity…” / “…and beyond” exchange. “It was so sad.”
Allen also shared a lighthearted story about how recognizable Buzz’s voice has become in everyday life. While riding an elevator in New York, he noticed a child misbehaving toward his mother. Allen decided to speak up — in character. “I said, ‘One of these days you and Andy will be sitting around a campfire,’” he recalled. “The kid froze. He looked panicked, and then yelled at his mom, ‘That old man swallowed Buzz Lightyear!’”
Pixar has not yet announced a release date for Toy Story 5, but Allen said the story is “such a great one” that fans of the franchise will be in for another emotional ride.
