Kate McKinnon, known for her decade on Saturday Night Live and her role as Weird Barbie in Barbie, has shared a health update.
She revealed that she has been diagnosed with a condition called geographic tongue.
In a recent interview with People, McKinnon explained that she shares the condition with a friend, joking that she recently texted them a photo of her tongue. She described geographic tongue as when “your tongue sheds in patches and looks like an atlas, hence the name.”
According to the American Academy of Oral Medicine, geographic tongue is a harmless condition that affects between 1% and 2.5% of the global population. It occurs when small bumps, known as papillae, are missing from areas of the tongue, creating smooth, red patches that resemble a map. While the condition may look unusual, it generally does not cause serious health concerns.
McKinnon referred to the diagnosis as “gross,” though medical experts stress that it is relatively common and usually symptom-free. In some cases, geographic tongue can lead to mild discomfort or a burning sensation, particularly when consuming spicy or acidic foods. Treatment is not typically required, but doctors can prescribe medication if symptoms become painful.
The exact cause of geographic tongue remains unknown, though some studies suggest a possible genetic link. Family history may increase the likelihood of developing the condition, but no direct prevention methods have been identified.
McKinnon’s candid disclosure brings attention to a condition many people may have without realizing it. For the Emmy-winning comedian, the diagnosis is more of a curiosity than a concern, as she continues her successful career on screen.
