Renowned UK choreographer Paul Roberts, who worked with music icons such as One Direction, Harry Styles, and Katy Perry, has passed away at the age of 52. His death, announced by his partner Phil Griffin on Instagram, followed a courageous battle with cancer. Roberts died on the evening of September 27, surrounded by his family. Griffin described Roberts’ passing as being “filled with grace,” reflecting the dignity he had shown throughout his life.
For over 25 years, Roberts was a key figure in the world of choreography, shaping dance routines for some of the biggest names in music. His credits included working on iconic One Direction videos such as “Kiss You,” “Steal My Girl,” and “Best Song Ever,” as well as the Spice Girls reunion tour. Roberts also contributed to the critically acclaimed TV series I Hate Suzie, which starred Billie Piper.
In a 2021 interview with the BBC, Roberts spoke fondly of his time working with One Direction, noting the band’s natural chemistry and untapped dancing potential. He recalled moments when the group would improvise dance moves, showing a light-hearted side that he believed was essential to their success.
Perhaps one of his most memorable projects was collaborating with Harry Styles on the choreography for the “Treat People With Kindness” music video, which also featured Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The video, filmed shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, became a symbol of carefree joy, something Roberts attributed to the chemistry between Styles and Waller-Bridge.
Following his death, tributes from fellow musicians, friends, and collaborators poured in. Lottie Tomlinson, Niall Horan's publicist Simon Jones, and members of the Spice Girls and Steps all expressed their condolences, praising Roberts for his talent, warmth, and kindness.
Roberts is survived by his partner, artist and photographer Phil Griffin.
