KARACHI:

The anchorperson of a private television channel, Imtiaz Mir, who was critically injured in firing by unidentified assailants near Kala Board, Malir, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital. Mir remained under treatment for a week. His condition deteriorated and he breathed his last on Sunday, his family confirmed.

The Saudabad police registered an FIR of the incident against unknown killers but were still unable to make any headway in finding any clue to reach the culprits and their facilitators. Mir’s family stated that details of his funeral and burial would be announced shortly.

Condolences pour in

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed deep grief and sorrow over Mir’s death and directed the Inspector General of Police to arrest the killers immediately. He vowed that the perpetrators “would not escape the clutches of law enforcement agencies.”

The CM mentioned, “Justice will be provided to the bereaved family of Mir and the Sindh government is determined to bring this case to its logical conclusion.”

Meanwhile, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon paid tribute to Mir as a “hardworking and fearless journalist who always highlighted public issues.” Sharjeel pledged, the Sindh government would “leave no stone unturned” to apprehend those involved in the killing of the newman and give them exemplary punishment.

“The Sindh government is committed to protecting journalists’ lives and property. Those responsible for the attack on Imtiaz Mir will be brought before the law,” Sharjeel added.

A spokesperson for the Karachi Police said, Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho expressed “deep grief and sorrow” over the death of the senior anchorperson and prayed for patience for the bereaved family.

Mir’s killing has sparked renewed calls from media organisations and civil society for greater protection for journalists working in the province.
