Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem update introduces Nautilus mob, new spear weapon and underwater gameplay
Mojang Studios has unveiled details of Minecraft’s upcoming update, Mounts of Mayhem, revealed during the latest Minecraft LIVE showcase.
The content follows closely after the Copper Age update and is expected to be released during the 2025 holiday season.
A central addition to the update is the Nautilus, a new deep-sea mob found in the coldest and darkest parts of the ocean. Players can tame the Nautilus using Pufferfish, making it a reliable mount for underwater exploration. When riding the creature, the oxygen bar is paused, allowing extended time beneath the surface.
In addition, Nautilus Armour can be crafted using materials ranging from iron to Netherite, offering protection for the mount. Breeding is also possible, with baby Nautiluses available in-game.
However, the mob is not without dangers. Water-dwelling zombies will appear riding Zombie Nautiluses, attacking players with tridents. The hostile mobs will add a new layer of difficulty to aquatic areas, extending the challenge for survival mode.
Mounts of Mayhem also introduces a new weapon: the spear. Designed for long-range melee combat, the spear can be used both underwater and on land, with the added feature of jousting when mounted on horses. In response, zombie enemies will be seen on horseback, wielding spears, creating new combat scenarios.
While no firm release date has been set, Mojang confirmed the update will arrive later in 2025. The announcement follows a busy year for the franchise, which has included The Copper Age update, a Dragon Ball Z collaboration, and the release of A Minecraft Movie, which grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide.
Minecraft continues to be the best-selling video game to date, available across all major platforms including Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC.
