Ananta criticised over Uncharted 4 similarities after Spider-Man comparisons resurface

NetEase’s upcoming free-to-play open-world game Ananta is once again facing criticism, this time over similarities to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4.
The title first attracted attention on September 23 when its gameplay trailer was released. While some praised its scope, others noted that several elements appeared heavily inspired by existing games.
Comparisons included a city environment reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto and a swinging system using animations described as near-identical to those in Insomniac’s Spider-Man series.
Ananta resurfaced at Tokyo Game Show 2025 with a ten-minute gameplay demo. While the footage generated interest, a particular sequence prompted further debate.
Towards the end of the showcase, protagonist Chenxiu is dragged behind a moving truck, suspended by black web-like material, while crashing through obstacles and avoiding hazards via quick-time events.
Observers pointed out strong similarities to a well-known sequence from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, in which Nathan Drake is pulled through the streets of Madagascar in a comparable chase.
That set piece featured prominently in the marketing for the 2016 release and remains one of the franchise’s most recognisable moments.
On X, one user commented: “At this point the plagiarism is so blatant it’s actually kind of impressive,” while another labelled the footage “stolen asset slop.”
Others reacted more lightly, with one remarking: “Only thing this game is missing is catching monsters into balls.”
Not all responses were critical. Some players argued that borrowing mechanics and design elements from successful titles is common in the industry.
Ananta is confirmed for PlayStation 5, PC, iOS, and Android, though no release date has been announced.
NetEase has also clarified that, despite initial assumptions, it will not use a gacha system, with characters instead unlocked through gameplay progression.
