YouTube users are experiencing a surge in age-related restrictions as the platform expands its use of AI-based age estimation technology.

Initially tested in Europe, the system began rolling out in the U.S. earlier this year. It analyzes signals such as account age, viewing history, search activity, and even the types of videos watched to estimate whether a user is under 18. If flagged, users face restrictions including limited ad targeting, blocked access to mature content, and fewer “potentially problematic” recommendations.

Although YouTube has assured users that identity verification data—like government IDs or credit cards—won’t be used for advertising, privacy advocates remain concerned. Critics have called the system “creepy” and overly invasive, citing the potential for data misuse.

At first, the system affected only a small portion of users. But as of September 24, reports have surged. According to 9to5Google, many users across mobile and desktop platforms are now being prompted to verify their age—some for the first time. The prompt states that account settings have changed, requiring ID submission to regain full access.

This aligns with YouTube’s earlier warnings that AI-based checks would eventually scale beyond a limited group. However, the system isn’t perfect. Adults watching family-friendly or youth-focused content could be wrongly flagged as underage, leading to unintended restrictions.

Despite Google’s assurances that ID data won’t be retained for ad purposes, cybersecurity experts remain skeptical, warning it could still be used for other internal processes.

With the rollout accelerating, many users are voicing frustration at being locked out of content until they verify their identity—a sign that YouTube’s push for stricter age controls is now in full swing.
