Rebel Wilson has assembled a lineup of pop icons and screen talent for her new comedy Girl Group, which has begun filming in the UK.
The Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect star is writing, directing, and producing the film, which features Melanie C of the Spice Girls, Shaznay Lewis from All Saints, and Pussycat Dolls singer Ashley Roberts. Sheridan Smith, known for her role in ITV’s I Fought The Law, also joins the cast. Together, the group will play a fictional band called Girlfriends.
The story follows Wilson as a former pop diva who is expelled from her reunion tour and sentenced to community service. Tasked with coaching a group of teenage girls for a high-stakes audition, her character faces personal struggles and challenges in the competitive music industry.
Wilson described the project as “the ultimate girl power movie,” adding that her experience in Pitch Perfect inspired her to create a musical comedy filled with energy and humor. “Girl Group is just so fun and full of spirit that’s ready to have you singing and dancing out of the cinema,” she said.
This marks Wilson’s second directorial project after The Deb, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival but remains unreleased due to legal disputes. Alongside Girl Group, she will also star in Sky Original Cinema’s holiday film Tinsel Town later this year with Kiefer Sutherland and Danny Dyer.
