Jamie Laing has apologised to his former Made in Chelsea co-star and longtime friend Spencer Matthews after leaving him off the guest list for his 2023 wedding to Sophie Habboo in London.
The pair, who were once close on the reality series, had grown apart in recent years as tensions quietly developed. Matthews revealed he was “hurt” and “confused” by the exclusion, saying it created a rift in their friendship.
Speaking on Laing’s Great Company podcast, Matthews admitted the snub “hurt deeply” after learning of the wedding through a newspaper article his wife, Vogue Williams, had shown him. “I found it pretty confusing. I was pretty hurt by that and I tried to brush that under the table,” he said, adding that it was difficult to reconcile with seeing other friends in attendance.
Laing acknowledged the decision was poorly communicated and explained it stemmed from Habboo’s struggles with anxiety leading up to the ceremony. “During the wedding Soph was very anxious and having a really tough time… she had said to me before, ‘I just want to get married with my feet in the sand. I don’t want all of this, you want all of this Jamie,’” Laing shared.
He further admitted he worried Matthews, who had opted out of his stag-do, might not want to attend the wedding either, fearing it could feel “weird.” Matthews clarified that his absence from the stag-do was related to his history with alcohol, saying such events were not for him, but stressed he “would have loved” to be at the wedding.
Laing apologised directly during the conversation, saying: “The biggest mistake I made is not communicating with you, and I was very selfish, just focusing on my own emotions… I’m sorry that happened and if I could take it back, I would.”
Matthews reflected that he should have joined the stag-do without drinking, adding that he later reached out to Laing after his ultra-marathon charity challenge. The exchange marks an attempt at reconciliation between the two, who rose to prominence together on Made in Chelsea.
