Zach Cregger, the director and co-writer behind the hit horror film Weapons, has confirmed that discussions are underway for a prequel to the 2025 release.
In a recent interview, Cregger revealed that he has been in conversations with Warner Bros. about developing a story that expands on the universe introduced in the original film.
“It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit,” he said.
The idea for a prequel, Cregger explained, was conceived even before Weapons premiered.
Some material focusing on the character Aunt Gladys, portrayed by Amy Madigan, had been written into early drafts but was ultimately cut from the final version of the film.
The prequel aims to explore these untold aspects of the story, offering fans a deeper look into the origins and backstory of the franchise’s characters.
Weapons has been a major success both critically and commercially, grossing over $264 million worldwide and building a strong fanbase for its unique blend of horror and dark humor.
The prequel is expected to continue in the same tone, while potentially expanding the lore and introducing new characters.
In addition to the prequel talks, Cregger is also working on a fresh installment in the Resident Evil franchise, scheduled for theatrical release on September 18, 2026.
Meanwhile, Weapons remains available for digital purchase, allowing new audiences to experience the film before the prequel arrives.
With Cregger actively developing these projects, fans of horror and franchise storytelling have plenty to look forward to, as the Weapons universe appears poised to grow in scope and depth.
